LINE + DIRECTION

“A line is a series of connected points that can be thin, thick, straight or curved.”

Kennedy, 2008

THE FACTS

About Lines:

  • There are many different types of lines such as thick, thin, broken and textured.

  • Lines can be long, short, broken, un-broken, curved, straight or jagged.

  • Thick lines are powerful whilst thin lines are delicate.

About Direction:

  •  Lines and their direction can create interesting silhouettes within fashion as they create boundaries for garments.

  • They have psychological effects.  For example, repeated, sharp, zig-zag lines are disturbing and violent.  Curves are softening and calming.

  • Fabric types impact on the lines of a garment.  For example a flowing fabric will create calming curves due to its soft drape.
