Let's play with rendering...

Activity 6: Experimenting with rendering mediums

  1. Gather the following items together:

    • Sketchbook

    • Copic Markers

    • Lead Pencils

    • Coloured Pencils

    • Water Colours

    • Magazines, scissors and glue

    • Charcoal

  2. Print or photocopy 3 copies of your inked up design's from Activity 4 or Activity 5.

  3. Using three different mediums, render each drawing and try make the sketches look 3-D and made from different textured fabrics.   To do this think about light and texture.

  4. Scan or take photos of each drawing and import them into InDesign.  Create a poster of your renders and share here.

Rendering

Fashion Illustrations communicate light, texture, movement, colour and mood through rendering.  Rendering is the process of making a drawing look three dimensional through shading with pencils, charcoal, watercolours, Copic markers or other mediums.

Rendering is the gradual layering of tones or colours to communicate how light interacts with a surface. Through practice and experimenting, designer's techniques develop and become more refined as they gradually develop their own rendering "style".

Explore the gallery and videos below, examining the medium's used and shading techniques used to communicate fabrics.  You will notice that each render is emotive, reflecting the psychological effect of the garment on the audience.

Hint:  Start with the lightest colours, then gradually layer the drawing with the darker tones.

Reflection time...

  • Did you like the process of rendering?

  • Did you feel yourself getting more confident each time you did a new render in a different medium?

  • Have you found a rendering medium you are comfortable with?

  • From these exercises, do you now think you have the skills to keep rendering in the future?

Respond to one or more of the reflective questions in the box below.

Activity: Find an example of a Fashion render.  Share it here and write two sentences describing its style.
